Position: Seasonal Diver
Facility: Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, Vallejo, CA
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Daily, walk through park to inspect all pools and exhibit tanks. Assist in determining daily dives needed. Work with other depts. To facilitate dives in their areas.
- Prepare diving equipment prior to all dives. Ensure that gear is in safe working condition and that SCUBA tanks are filled and operational. Maintain dive compressor.
- Take on and off SCUBA gear including wetsuit, gloves, mask, fins, weight belt tanks, etc.
- SCUBA dive up to 30-foot depths in varying temperature conditions. May include diving in pools and tanks containing both small and large exotic marine mammals.
- Use scrub brushes, vacuum etc. to clean pools and exhibit tanks. Scrub algae and dirt off pool and tank sides and bottoms.
- Perform minor underwater repairs or replacement of grates, etc. as needed.
- While diving, monitor safety at all times. Monitor air levels in tanks at all times.
- Dive into dark ozone towers to replace air stones or perform routine maintenance and repairs. Clean air stones with acid and rotate back into ozone towers.
- Maintain dive log. Record dive times and lengths of dives. Report any problems with dives or pools to Sr. Diver or Supervisor.
- During major water drops, keep pools and tanks pumped out and free of water. Prepare pools for water drops; plug drains, skimmer boxes, etc.
- Take dive equipment and tanks to SCUBA shops to be repaired and re-filled.
- Assist with the transport of animals as assigned.
- Report any animal behavioral or medical problems to the appropriate Manager immediately.
- Assist in other Oceanarium areas as assigned.
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Must possess current SCUBA certification.
- Prior dive experience beyond certification required.
- Must possess the mental and physical capacities necessary to perform the job duties. Must possess strong swimming skills. Must be able to bend, kneel, pull oneself out of the pool, possesses good manual dexterity, be able to lift up to 80 lbs and climb stair and ladders while in dive gear. Must possess good vision and hearing.
- Must be willing and able to dive up to four hours per day in cold saltwater.
- Must possess a working knowledge of the use of basic hand tools.

Job Description:
The Seattle Aquarium is a vital and iconic local landmark, engaging and educating visitors about the wonders of Puget Sound and the oceans beyond. Located on Piers 59/60 on the Seattle Waterfront, the Aquarium has welcomed over 17 million guests since opening in 1977.
The Aquarium is the eighth largest in the U.S. by attendance and the Puget Sound region’s third largest paid cultural attraction. With 92 full time equivalent staff, the Aquarium aspires to not only educate visitors about the marine world, but also to inspire wonder, and action to safeguard the oceans as vital to the existence of life on earth.
On July 1, 2010 the nonprofit Seattle Aquarium Society assumed management of the Seattle Aquarium from the City of Seattle, Department of Parks and Recreation. With funding from the 2005 capital campaign, New Currents, the Aquarium expanded Pier 59 by 18,000 square feet in 2007 along with a much-needed face-lift. The $42 million renovation included new exhibits, a gift shop, and food service in addition to meeting and event facilities. Since the renovation, attendance numbers have been dramatic with historical records in the last several years.
The Director of Facilities is a member of the executive management team of the Seattle Aquarium and reports to the President & CEO. Primary responsibilities include the overall maintenance and planned improvement of the City-owned physical facility constituting the Aquarium, managing a departmental budget of $12M. This iconic Seattle attraction is comprised of two different over-water pier structures enclosing a variety of indoor and outdoor exhibits displaying live animals and utilizing 24-hour seawater intake from Elliott Bay.
This position will be a key contributor to the team and responsible for:
- Maintenance standards for a retail oriented Aquarium with annual visitation of over 800,000 visitors per year.
- Fostering expertise related to unique management of life support systems relying on a combination of fresh as well as self-collected salt water.
- Effective deployment of existing team of 10 FTE’s representing a variety of key disciplines including custodial, engineering, wood shop, overnight third shift staffing and a portfolio of qualified outside contractor partners for matters related to plumbing, paint, electrical, elevator, HVAC and related.

Essential functions:
Departmental
- Plan, organize and manage the activities of the Facilities and Operations department on a 24/7 basis. Includes the development of short and long term goals and objectives in support of the Aquarium’s twenty year strategic plan adopted in 2011.
- Prepare and manage assigned budgets. Analyze monthly budget reports of operating and capital costs to ensure accuracy and update forecasted expenditures. Recommend capital expenditures and revise in line with established guidelines and procedures.

- Is the primary technical resource bridging Biology and Engineering disciplines to assure each are represented fully during planning, projects, daily operations and operations of critical life support systems.
- Partner with conservation Curator in green leadership practices including sustainability planning within construction/renovations, facilities maintenance, life support systems, handling of toxic chemicals, office practices, utility efficiencies, e.g. water, power, waste reduction and staff/volunteer/visitor messaging.
Construction & Renovation Projects
- Responsible for the management of construction and renovation projects including capital planning for projects with timelines in excess of 5 years. Includes providing recommendations for appropriate consultants and contractors along with the guidance for the bid and selection process.
Contract Management
- Participate in the negotiation of construction contracts, professional design services and procurement contracts ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements, internal policies and acquisition of necessary permits. Provide on-site management of construction contracts and coordination of contractor activities with Aquarium activities to provide the minimum disruption possible to daily activity.
Special Knowledge and Skills:
- Technical facilities management expertise as well as biological systems knowledge.
- Experience managing a facility with comparable mechanical complexity and budget and/or an aquarium, aquaculture, research, or animal rehabilitation facility with marine life and salt water exposure.
- Experience with fish husbandry, water quality and or life support system installation and maintenance experience with a substantial portion of that time (3 years or more) as a responsible Project Manager with full exposure to administrative aspects of construction management strongly preferred.
- Valid First Aid and CPR training required.
- Washington State driver’s license and a good driving record required.
Education:
- BA/BS Degree in Business Administration, Civil/Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, Biology/Life Science or and equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience:

As a senior member of the MLP team the Senior Manager LSS Engineering is responsible for the leadership, development, planning and management of all aspects of the Oceanarium Engineering to ensure all systems and facilities are operated to the highest standards as it relates to the water quality and equipment. Position: Manager LSS Engineering
Facility: Marine Life Park, Resorts World Sentosa, Singapore
Job Purpose:
As a senior member of the LSS Engineering team the Manager is responsible for the daily planning and maintenance of the LSS equipment to ensure all aquarium special mechanical and electrical systems and facilities are operated to the highest standards as it relates to the water quality for marine animals and fishes. The Manager makes certain policies and procedures are in place and maintained to ensure the safety of our staff and marine animals at all times.
Critical Accountablilities:
- Provides direction (under the Senior Manager) to the entire department in terms of LSS Engineering operations and safety ensuring best practices are followed at all times.
- Must be functionally literate in all aspects of LSS plant operations, ranging from automation, through pumps, filters, ozone and chlorine dioxide generators, chilled water systems, foam fractionation and bio towers.
- Develop procedures to maintain all LSS equipment throughout entire operation.
- Ensure the highest quality of water in all MLP tanks and pools to ensure the health of the marine animals.
- Coordinates and manages the work of all LSS Engineering crew.
- Coordinates with the curatorial and operations department.

FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL EXPERIENCE: The position requires an individual who has direct experience working at all levels and functions within an aquarium or dolphin facility. Direct experience in the planning and set up of a new operation is critical. Position: Crew Life Support System(LSS) Engineering

As a member of the LSS Engineering team the Crew is responsible for the daily maintenance of the LSS equipment and crew duties to ensure all aquarium special hydraulic, mechanical and electrical systems and facilities are operated to the highest standards as it relates to the water quality for marine animals and fishes. The Crew shall observe all SOP and safety considerations at all times.

Position: Life Support Technician

The position is responsible for the safe operation, maintenance, repair and monitoring of all aspects of life support and mechanical systems of the Zoo’s water exhibits. Work involves conducting water tests and analysis, preventive maintenance, along with reading plans and blueprints. Responsibilities will include support of related equipment used for diving and responding to mechanical problems arising during dives. The specialist will communicate with Animal Care staff regarding pertinent information relating to life support systems. This is a full-time hourly position, reporting to the Operations Supervisor. Must be on call for emergencies and may work varied shifts.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conducts repairs on all life-support and facility mechanical systems, including, but not limited to: fresh and salt-water pumps, filters, heat exchangers, valves, pressure regulators and automation equipment, low-voltage systems, building hardware, plumbing and other duties as deemed necessary to maintain facility operations.
- Maintain proper water quality using sanitizers, ozone and other chemicals
- Maintain water chemistry, including salinity, PH levels and other parameters
- Maintain proper water filtration for turbidity/clarity
- Responsible for maintaining accurate records.
- Performs various troubleshooting techniques related to system problems and/or malfunctions
- Assists in maintaining clean work environments
- Assists in the design of new filtration systems
- Assists Supervisor in ordering and stocking of all necessary chemicals, equipment and supplies.
- Maintain appropriate communications with Animal Care Supervisors and staff as to water and pool conditions.
- Support other related equipment used for dives.
- Respond to emergencies

Qualifications Skills and Abilities:
- Four years paid full time or part time equivalent experience in water treatment, mechanical maintenance or laboratory work; or a degree from an accredited college in Biology or other natural science plus two years’ experience in mentioned areas of work.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships and to function in a team environment with limited supervision
- Knowledge and understanding of water chemistry and water quality parameters, analysis, filtration systems etc.
- Experience with salt and fresh water systems
- Experience with USDA marine mammal standards related to water quality.
- Good working knowledge of hydraulic/pumping, automated control and filtration/disinfection systems as well as knowledge of electricity, interpreting values on machinery and gauges
- Proven troubleshooting and problem solving skills
- Working knowledge of water filtration systems
- The ability to work on ones feet for extensive periods of time ,in adverse conditions (e.g. cramped spaces and wet environment).
- Must be fully capable of reading technical drawings, technical specifications and written repair/maintenance procedures with minimum supervision.
- Must be able to lift safely up to 80+ pounds
- Computer literate
- Must be able to pass swimming and water safety test.
- Familiarity with RCK control automation a plus

The Associate Curator of Fish and Invertebrates serves as a resource and provides training for aquarist staff in the development of job skills that includes aquascaping, exhibit and life support systems design, construction and maintenance, aquatic organism disease recognition and treatment, collecting techniques, organism identification, program participation and guest interactions. This position is responsible for daily inspections to assess exhibit quality, animal health and life support systems to maintain the Aquarium’s high exhibit experience standards. The Associate Curator of Fish and Invertebrates will work within a curatorial team that mandates strong interpersonal skills. Support of team growth and maintenance as it relates to effective management is essential.
This position requires a four-year college degree, a minimum of three years in a senior capacity at a public aquarium or zoo, proven experience supervising staff and managing projects and general knowledge of all aspects of aquatic animal husbandry, and demonstrated mastery of universally-accepted aquarium husbandry skills that include organism collecting, transport and acclimation, quarantine, clinical treatments, health assessment; life support system design, construction, operation and maintenance; exhibit concept development, design, installation and maintenance. Our ideal candidate will have good verbal and written communication skills, and demonstrated knowledge of the natural history of exhibition flora and fauna, SCUBA certification and a valid California driver’s license with clearance from the DMV Pull Program.
